Cisco Adapts Search Engine in Order to Help China Government
Rather than help expand the idea of freedom for people to have, large U.S. firms such as Cisco have been recently making contracts with the Chinese government in order to aid them with censored search engines. Robert McMahon, the author of the article “U.S. Internet Providers and The ‘Great Firewall of China’” discusses Derek Bambauer, a former student apart of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, and his research on the Cisco contributions towards China. Bambauer looked into and found proof of Cisco adapting their search engines in order to assist China. He claims, “This upgrade significantly increased China's ability to monitor Internet usage. Cisco also sold several thousand routers (IHT) used to censor web content, and ‘firm's engineers have helped set it to spot 'subversive' key-words in messages.’”
